The Paris Agreement on climate change is a landmark international accord that was adopted in 2015 by 196 countries, including the United States. Its aim is to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The United States, under the Obama administration, played a major role in the development and adoption of the Paris Agreement. However, in 2017, the Trump administration announced its intention to withdraw the United States from the agreement, arguing that it would lead to lost jobs and economic growth.

Despite the U.S. withdrawing from the agreement, the Paris accord continues to be a major global effort to tackle climate change. The agreement has been ratified by all countries except for the U.S., which has now formally left the accord.

The U.S. withdrawal has not stopped other countries from making significant commitments to combat climate change. China, the world`s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, has pledged to reach peak emissions by 2030 and to become carbon neutral by 2060. The European Union has also committed to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030.

The U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement has also sparked a renewed commitment to climate action within the country. Several states, cities, and businesses in the U.S. have pledged to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, even in the absence of federal action. In fact, many U.S. companies have pledged to reduce their environmental impact and shift towards renewable energy sources.

In addition, President Biden has made it a priority to rejoin the Paris Agreement and to take ambitious climate action. On his first day in office, he signed an executive order to rejoin the accord, and has pledged to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

In conclusion, the Paris Agreement on climate change continues to be a significant global effort to combat the threat of climate change. Despite the U.S. withdrawal from the agreement, other countries, states, cities, and businesses are committed to achieving the goals of the accord. The U.S. has an opportunity to play a leadership role in the fight against climate change by rejoining the Paris Agreement and taking ambitious action to reduce emissions and shift towards renewable energy sources.
